A vertical mixer operates by drawing material from the bottom cone of the vessel and elevating it via an internal vertical screw auger to the top, where it cascades outward over the expanding batch. This continuous recirculation creates uniform mixing with significantly lower energy draw than horizontal mixers.

Working Principle

Material is poured into the floor-level intake hopper. The central vertical screw picks up material from the bottom cone and conveys it rapidly to the top of the main cylindrical tank. At the top, a rotating distribution plate flings material outwards, cascading it down over the batch. This continuous elevation-and-cascade cycle blends the entire volume uniformly over 15 minutes.

A vertical mixer only needs power to drive a single central screw auger, which elevates material using gravity cascade recirculations, whereas horizontal mixers must shear through the entire batch volume at once.

Vertical mixers are best for dry powders and coarse mash feeds. For high-percentage liquid addition (above 3%), a horizontal paddle mixer is generally recommended.

Complete batch recirculation and thorough mixing is typically achieved in 12 to 20 minutes depending on batch size and material density.
